SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Utah teachers' salaries remained 14 percent below the national average, according to an American Federation of Teachers study released Wednesday.
Utah was No. 35 in the latest survey of teacher salaries, up from 36th during the 2000-2001 school year.
Teachers in Utah made an average of $38,513 a year, with first-year teachers making an average of $26,806. Both figures were up 4.5 percent from the 2000-2001 school year, but still below the national averages.
Teachers made an average of $44,397 nationally, and first-year teachers made an average of $30,719 nationally.
Utah is ranked last in per-pupil spending, according to the federal government's National Center for Education Statistics.
