(KSL News) -- The leadership of the Utah Episcopal Diocese is standing behind yesterday's nomination.

Bishop Carolyn Tanner Irish cast her vote in favor of welcoming the Reverend Gene Robinson to the council of bishops. She commended Robinson for openly admitting that he is gay, and says the historic vote was a matter of truth and honesty.

Bishop Carolyn Tanner Irish, Diocese of Utah: "AND I THINK THAT IT IS BAD FOR THE HUMAN SOUL, TO BE IN A COMMUNITY THAT INSISTS ON DISHONESTY. THE SUBJECT OF HOMOSEXUALITY IS NOT NEW TO THE CHURCH"

Irish says she feels most of the church's Utah membership backs the decision.
