SUMMIT COUNTY -- Deer Valley Ski Resort kicked off the season Saturday with its annual Celebrity Skifest event.

Skiers who braved the storm chose from 12 runs and 10 lifts. The Celebrity Skifest included an invitational ski race involving Olympic skiers and numerous film and television stars.

While the snowfall was a welcome sight for the resort, officials say they manage to do just fine without it.

"We've been able to make a significant amount of snow and we are opening with actually a pretty solid base," said Erin Grady, the communications manager for Deer Valley.

Real or artificial, skiers seemed to enjoy the snow just the same. "It was great! For man-made snow it was unbelievable," said Lorring Allyn.

A resort spokesperson said Deer Valley will be offering discounted lift tickets this weekend to celebrate the opening.
