(Alpine-AP) -- Alpine Fire Chief Craig Carlisle says five wildfires in the foothills in July may have been arson.

He said highway flares were found at two of the fire scenes, and there were similarities at three other fires.

Carlisle says four out of five were in the evening, all were within a few days of each other and all were in the same general area.

He said there is a good chance they were all caused by the same person.

Police Chief Kip Botkin said no evidence or files have been sent to his office to be reviewed for investigation.

Carlisle said there really wasn't much to give the police, and he doubts the perpetrator could be caught.
