HEBER CITY, Utah (AP) -- Utah Valley State College has formally opened a satellite campus, dubbed the Wasatch Campus.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Tuesday at the 73,325-square-foot building just north of Heber City.
The $10 million structure opened for classes Aug. 27 with about 260 students.
Built to handle 2,600 students, the building includes nine classrooms, 13 offices, a 100-seat lecture hall, bookstore, kitchen, library and 12,390 square feet of unfinished space for future expansion.
"We hope to grow exponentially," said J.D. Davidson, dean of the Wasatch Campus. "I think there's a potential for 15,000 students here eventually."
UVSC is also considering future growth, with Payson as a potential site for a satellite campus.
UVSC President William A. Sederburg said the Utah State Board of Regents has given UVSC the responsibility to serve Utah, Wasatch and Summit counties.
"It's legitimate to be here and it's also a growing area that has a wonderful future," Sederburg said.
The Wasatch Campus currently offers all the courses needed to obtain an associate's degree in arts or science.
At the new facility, students also will be able to participate in master's degree and doctoral programs through Utah State University, Davidson said.
Heber City Mayor Lynn Adams, who is an assistant professor of marketing and organizational behavior at the Wasatch campus, said, "This campus is our new economy. This is the lynch pin of our economy and the culture of our community."
