(KSL News) -- A Utah soldier injured while fighting in Iraq was honored today. First Sergeant Steven Cochran was awarded the Purple Heart.

Cochran was injured in 2003 while serving in Fallujah, Iraq. Flying shrapnel from enemy fire hit him, injuring his head and right hand.

Despite his injuries, Cochran secured the area, allowing a severely injured soldier to be evacuated.

Cochran is a member of the 141st Intelligence Battalion.
