Besides all the shopping today, another tradition is helping to ring in the beginning of the holiday season. Downtown Salt Lake City is about to be illuminated with thousands of lights.
Ready or not, Christmas is just 26 days away! After a long day of shopping, waiting for the lights at Temple Square to come on is a big tradition for a lot of families.
Thousands of people are downtown tonight waiting for the big moment. There is no official time to when the lights will come on, but we expect them on around 5:30.
Crews have worked for several weeks now to string thousands and thousands of Christmas lights on Temple Square and also the Main Street Plaza. Every year the lights attract people to this area during the holidays. And the big moment that everyone is waiting for right now is when the switch will be flipped and the lights will come on.
And the lights will extend well beyond Temple Square to Salt Lake's Main Street and at the Gateway Plaza. At the Gateway Olympic Plaza at 6:00 there will be a Christmas tree lighting ceremony, with concert choirs and Kurt Bestor piano music. Also at 6:30 Bountiful has an Electric Light Parade that travels along its main street.
