SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The state Board of Regents on Monday approved A. Lorris Betz as interim president of the University of Utah, effective Jan. 1.

Betz is senior vice president for health sciences and dean of medical school.

He will fill in until a successor is picked for Bernie Machen, who is leaving to become president of the University of Florida in Gainesville. The appointment of Betz to the temporary job would precludes him from becoming a candidate for the permanent position, according to state Board of Regents policies.

David Bjorkman, a senior associate medical school dean, will serve as interim dean of the medical school.
