Sandra Yi ReportingUtah's Granite School District is making a big move. It plans to purchase the former Rocky Mountain Medical Center.

The Granite School District plans to make the old hospital its new district home. The district purchased the property from IASIS Healthcare, which operates several hospital facilities in Utah.

It will be a major move for the state’s second largest school district. The new Granite Education Center will centralize the district’s administration offices and education programs, including the Granite Technology Institute.

The district bought the vacant property for $15 million and calls it a steal, saying building a similar facility would have cost about four times as much.

The money will come out of the district’s capital outlay fund which pays for building and remodeling. It will not affect teachers’ salaries. Granite School District will use short-term financing to pay for the project now.

The district also plans to spend about $9 million in renovation. The new facility is expected to open by the end of the year.

Administrators say the facility is not too big for the district. Although they have seen a decline in enrollment the last few years, it seems to have steadied and is expected to grow again.

The district also plans to share the facility with the Salt Lake City School District.
