(Spokane, WA-AP) -- No Gonzaga basketball player has worn John Stockton's Number 12 since he graduated in 1984. But the Bulldogs are only now getting around to retiring the number.

The future Hall of Famer's number will be retired at halftime tomorrow evening when the sixth-ranked Bulldogs host Portland.

Athletic director Mike Roth says the team has wanted to do this for years, but the timing was never right because Stockton was always busy playing for the Utah Jazz during the basketball season.

Retired after last season, Stockton is back in Spokane and can often be spotted in the stands at Gonzaga games.

The last time a Gonzaga player wore number 12 was March 12, 1984, Stockton's last game as a Bulldog.
