Sam Penrod ReportingFor parents in South Jordan there's a collective sigh of relief after a woman with a knife forced a lockdown of two elementary schools.

School Locked Down Near Hostage Situation

There were some frightening moments for parents of elementary students in the South Jordan neighborhood. Many of them were there to pick their students up from school when they saw SWAT officers surrounding a nearby house, and learned that Jordan Ridge Elementary was in lockdown.

The trouble started at 9830 S. 2700 W. about 2:00 when a 911 call came in about a domestic dispute involving a knife and possibly a gun. That prompted police to lock down the school, which was only half a block away. It turns out that a woman was threatening a 12-year old child.

SWAT officers began negotiating with the suspect and the child eventually came outside safely. But the suspect would not. The standoff continued until about 3:45 when the woman walked out of the house with her dog and was eventually arrested by police.

All of this was going on as school was getting out, and parents were required to go into the school to pick up their children.

Julie Muir, Parent: "When we were just about to the gym where people were picking up the kids, they said that the suspect had been apprehended."

Lesa Reid, Parent: "I'm so glad. I am relieved but I'm glad they do that. Makes me feel safer to know they, that my kids will be taken care of safely if there's a problem."

The school kept students inside to make sure no young children were put in harm's way. By 4:00 this afternoon the situation was over and students were allowed to go home.

The 12-year old victim is being cared for by social workers and the suspect is being questioned by police. Police are relieved that no one involved in this situation this afternoon was hurt.
