(Salt Lake City-AP) -- The man who shot a deputy in Taylorsville during a traffic stop in January faces up to life in prison.
James Israel Torres was sentenced to five years to life in prison yesterday to aggravated attempted homicide. The 30-year-old was also sentenced to one-to-15-years in prison on one count each of burglary and theft charges.
As part of a plea bargain, Torres admitted he violated a protective order when he went to his wife's home January 19 and confronted her.
When he drove away, she called police who pulled Torres over. Torres is accused of then shooting the deputy and ramming his van into the deputy's cruiser. The deputy survived.
The judge ordered the sentences to run consecutively, saying Torres is "capable of extreme violence."
