(KSL News) -- There's not much time left to submit your taxes. Or if you're like 10-million other Americans, it's that four month extension you need to have filed by Thursday night.

It's not a certainty for everybody, like death and taxes, but millions of Americans this season are celebrating refunds from the IRS.

Even though more people are e-filing, millions of taxpayers still prefer getting their money the old fashioned way.

Richard Greg, U.S. Treasury: "We still issue 250 million checks every year, and if we could get, magically, all of those converted. We could save an additional 150 million dollars each and every year."

It costs the government 62 cents more to print and mail a check than it does to send it through direct deposit. But no matter how you do it, the IRS urges you to double-check your return for errors.

The agency says parents make the most common error seen this year by miscalculating the child tax credit or forgetting to factor in the advance child credit check sent last summer.

The IRS also cautions us to avoid other common errors by accurately reporting Social Security numbers, double-checking earned income tax credit calculations, and carefully using IRS tax tables. Errors can slow a refund or cause you to pay interest or penalties if more taxes are due.

The IRS also suggests that those of you who finish your taxes, but can't pay the amount due, should still file. Penalties for not filing are much steeper than those assessed on late tax payments.

At least 29 Utah post offices will be open late on tax day for late-night collections and stamp purchases. Again, tax returns must be postmarked by 11:59 pm April 15, that's Thursday.
