(Anchorage, AK-AP) -- A 30-year-old former Utah man is presumed dead after breaking through ice on remote Harlequin Lake east of Yakutat, Alaska.

Mike Nelson was on the first leg of a bike, ski and climbing traverse over the Saint Elias Range with Juneau mountaineer Mike Miller.

Alaska state troopers say the pair skied onto rotten ice on the lake last Saturday.

The two were wearing flotation devices and rescued each other three times as they struggled to find solid ice and retreat to safety on shore.

Miller eventually made it, but Nelson didn't.

Nelson's remains were recovered Tuesday.

Nelson worked in Juneau for six summers before moving there in 2003 from Provo.

He is survived by his parents and three brothers in Utah.
