(Salt Lake City-AP) -- Fearing it could lose state funding, University Hospital will soon no longer terminate pregnancies even if the fetus can't survive birth.

A bill passed by the 2004 Legislature cuts off state funding to any agency that performs abortions. The only exceptions are cases of rape, incest, or permanent and grave damage to a major bodily function of the pregnant woman.

Instead, cases such as anencephaly where babies develop without a brain, will be referred to abortion clinics or out of state hospitals. Or the women will have to carry the baby to term.

About five percent of the university's one (b) billion dollar health sciences budget comes from the state. The legislation goes into effect May 3.
