(KSL News) -- Utah strengthens its defense against the West Nile Virus with the help of some chickens.
Mosquito Abatement Districts around the state received flocks of chickens today. The chickens are used as sentinels, having weekly blood draws to detect antibodies to viruses which may cause encephalitis.
Along with the chicken flocks, Ultra Low Volume sprayers were calibrated to help combat West Nile Virus and other diseases spread by mosquitoes.
West Nile Virus is a mosquito-borne virus that can cause disease in some animals and humans.
