SUMMER BOOKS

June 21st. Parents already know that’s the date their children have been waiting for – the release of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I love the Harry Potter books and will be reading this latest installation of Harry, Hogwarts and Hermoine and reviewing it here on the Book Beat. But if you’re not into muggles and quidditch, there are several other promising books coming out just in time for your summer vacation.

One of my favorite quirky and thought-provoking authors, Margaret Atwood, is back with Oryx and Crake – a futuristic tale of people struggling to survive after environmental devastation. Joyce Carol Oates fans can look forward to her latest, The Tattooed Girl, and Clive Cussler has a new one coming out in June entitled White Death where Kurt Austin takes to the seas to save the world.

Quentin Tarantino has written a book called Kill Bill that will be out in July, and the prolific James Patterson has penned The Lake House, due in June. Already in book stores? Tony Hillerman’s The Sinister Pig, Jonathan Kellerman’s A Cold Heart, Christina Garcia’s Monkey Hunting, Suzan-Lori Parks’ Getting Mother’s Body and Rick Reilly’s Who’s Your Caddy? Looping for the Great, Near Great and Reprobates of Golf.

A good book makes for a great vacation – so happy reading! On the Book Beat for KSL Newsradio 1160, I’m Amanda Dickson.
