(Ogden-AP) -- What looked like a nine-millimeter handgun turned out to be a broken B-B gun. Either way, a Highland Middle School student is now facing expulsion.

The principal of Highland Middle School says the student brought the B-B gun to school yesterday and showed it to three students. One of the students told a teacher who then alerted the school's resource police officer.

The student who brought the B-B gun to school was suspended and is not allowed on school grounds. The school's principal is recommending he be expelled for up to one year.

The principal says a letter will be sent home with students today explaining what happened.
