Jed Boal ReportingIt's a painful night for friends and family of a Draper teen hit and killed by a school bus on the way home from school. Police call it a terrible accident and say there's nothing the bus driver could have done to avoid the boy on a bicycle.
Shortly after three, hundreds of students streamed out of the middle school. Many jumped on buses. 14-year old Kade Rosemann and a friend hopped on their bikes and headed home on the sidewalk of 300 East.
As a school bus overtook the riders the bus driver says one of them suddenly crossed the park strip and jumped the curb.
Sgt. Bill O'Neal, Sandy Police Department: “The kid jumped the curb and hit the rear right side of the bus. He was pulled under the tires and died instantly.”
Parents rushed in to help however they could.
Sue Hardin, Neighbor: “The kid just clung to me. He was visibly shook up. It was a very sad thing.”
Not long after the accident, a number of schoolmates of the teen came by to remember their friend, to pray and leave some flowers.
Amiee Berrett, Friend: “He just made everyone laugh. If you were down, he was there to help you."
There were a lot of hugs, a lot of tears and messages for a friend who died too young.
Tanisha Lewis, Friend: “He would just come up to you and give you a hug. He was the number one guy to see every day.”
The school district had counselors on the scene quickly and will have a crisis team at the school tomorrow for anyone who needs them.
