(Orem-AP) -- The man accused of beating a two-year-old so badly she was left comatose has pleaded innocent to felony attempted murder and aggravated sexual assault charges.

Juan Pablo Garcia-Miranda also pleaded innocent yesterday to one count of child abuse and neglect.

Police say the 22-year-old assaulted the two-year-old daughter of his common-law wife February 15. He took the girl to the emergency room with a fractured skull claiming she climbed on top of the kitchen table and fell while he was in the shower. But doctors at the time said they believe someone struck the girl's head into a very hard object.

Prosecutors say the little girl is recovering and that she's learning to walk again.

A trial date's been set for August 2.
