(St. George-AP) -- The Square Fires in southern Utah are closer to being contained.

The fires about 14 miles north of St. George are now 40 percent contained and could be 80 percent contained by the end of the day.

The fires had burned nearly 18-thousand acres. Officials hope to have the fire fully contained by Sunday.

Some resources from the Square Complex have been diverted to a new blaze 15 miles south of St. George. The Low Mountain fire started yesterday by lightning has burned one thousand acres.

No homes are being threatened by the fires.
