ROY, Utah (AP) -- A 37-year-old man was charged with aggravated kidnapping for allegedly holding a naked woman at gunpoint in her apartment.

Derek Max Peterson allegedly got inside the woman's apartment and caused about $5,000 damage before she got home, Police Chief Greg Whinham said.

When the woman arrived, Peterson allegedly took her into a back room, made her strip while pointing a .22-caliber handgun at her, court records said.

He then turned the gun on himself, threatening to pull the trigger with her watching.

Police believe his motive was to make her watch as he committed suicide.

Whinham said Peterson would not allow the woman to leave for about two hours, and alleged hit her twice with a large stick, causing minor injuries.

The woman fled the home when her alleged abductor became distracted, and ran to a nearby apartment and notified authorities.

Peterson was charged Wednesday with aggravated kidnapping, aggravated burglary, criminal mischief and interference with a communication device. His bail was set at $100,000.

A preliminary hearing was scheduled Friday.
