Sam Penrod ReportingFour BYU football players are under investigation tonight. A 17-year old girl has gone to police saying she was gang raped by the players. Provo Police are investigating these allegations of sexual assault.

It's more bad news for the BYU football program after several cases in recent years of players being accused of breaking the school's honor code. But this time it's a criminal investigation.

As BYU football fans arrived at the annual 'Meet the Team' night, many expressed disappointment to hear four members of the team are under investigation for allegations of sexual assault on the eve of the new football season.

Thomas Bore, BYU Fan: “I'm a bit disappointed, I hope it's not going to affect them too bad."

Provo Police confirm they are investigating a report from a 17-year old girl that she was gang raped at an apartment complex on Sunday August 9th.

Mike Mower, Provo City: "A 17-year old female reported to have been raped by multiple suspects. The suspect are reported to be BYU football players.”

The apartment is off campus, but is BYU approved. Police will not identify the players, saying the case is still under investigation.

Mike Mower, Provo City: "The Provo City police department has not issued any charges, no arrests have been made. Detectives simply continue to investigate these serious allegations."

No one from the BYU Athletic Department or the football coaching staff would talk about the case, instead referring all questions to a University spokesman.

Michael Smart, BYU Spokesperson: “These allegations are of grave misconduct that we, of course, take very seriously. This matter has the university’s full attention. We’ve been fully cooperative and will continue to be cooperative with the Provo police department.”

Last year other BYU football players were investigated by police for sexual assault. Their accuser later recanted the allegations. However, BYU punished six of the players for honor code violations and two players were expelled.

Provo police gave no indication of when the investigation in this case will be completed.
