SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A Salt Lake County Sheriff's deputy accused of disrobing in public has resigned.

Employees at a jewelry company told police Tuesday they saw Deputy Darrell Magee get out of his department-issued S-U-V and remove his clothes. According to the police report, he sat naked and cross-legged facing west for about 30 seconds before putting on his clothes. He told police he was conducting a religious ritual and was wearing underwear.

He was on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.

Yesterday, Magee turned in his resignation saying he was "re-thinking his career."

Magee has worked for the sheriff's office since 1996.

Prosecutors have declined to file any charges citing lack of evidence.
