(KSL News/AP)-- Two children are dead and another is hospitalized after a crash in West Valley City.

Police say it appears the 32-year-old father failed to negotiate a curve in the road around midnight last night and lost control of the car, crashing into a telephone pole.

A six-year-old girl was killed instantly and a two-month old baby boy was pronounced dead at the hospital. A ten-year-old boy is in the hospital in serious condition and the children's father is also in serious condition.

Rescuers tell us they deal with tough situations all the time, but this time the scene was particularly somber.

Bob Fitzgerald/ West Valley City Fire Dept.: "It's traumatic, especially when you have children involved. It's not our nature to give up. It's our nature to succeed and overcome any problem we come across. And unfortunately sometimes there's just nothing we can do."

Police say speed may have been a factor in the crash, but they do not believe alcohol or drugs were involved. They are still investigating.
