SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- An eight-year-old girl who was accidentally hanged yesterday while playing in the backyard has been upgraded to serious condition.

Police say Monica Elliott's father found her hanging from a makeshift swing last night after she was playing with her sister. The swing was actually a scarf tied to a clothesline which had been in the backyard for some time.

Police say Monica got stuck in the scarf and had stopped breathing for several minutes. Her father performed CPR on the girl until emergency crews arrived and transported her to Primary Children's Hospital in critical condition.

She has since been upgraded to serious condition.
