The Salt Lake City School District has come up with a smart way to give students and their families a high tech boost. It's a plan that's good for the students and the district.

The computer is a critical component of a child's education today, but they're not cheap. So the Salt Lake City School District took care of that problem for a couple hundred families.

The Salt Lake City School District had 500 surplus computers, used for a couple of years, and decided to sell them at a great price.

Jason Olsen, Salt Lake City School District: “Anyone in a title one school who qualifies for a fee waiver, maybe a low-income family, we're selling them a whole computer system for $25."

One hundred bucks for other families in the district. So a crowd lined up to snatch up complete Pentium two computer systems that the district is done with.

Francisco Chavez, fourth Grader: “It will help me on my homework, and I can tell people how it will help them on computers, and it will be a lot easier."

Sierra Ivie, Kindergartener: “They are awesome because I can play games on them."

With everyone in the family clamoring for computer time moms and dads aren't always eager to share.

Holly Ivie, Parent: “So we could pick up a computer for the kids to use so they wouldn't mess up our work on our computer."

For some families it's the first computer in the house. For others it's the second or third. But for parents with school-age kids, it's something they say they have to have.

Rebecca Nilson, Parent: “We're in a computer age. You need a computer for everything -- for research, for book reports, for any assignments in school."

Michael Harris picked up a system for each daughter as a surprise.

Michael Harris, Parent: “Be able to do their homework on-line. It's a valuable tool they need."

Jason Olsen, Salt Lake City School District: “You gotta have one. So by making these available, we hope to help some families in our district."

The district will hold the sale again next Thursday from 2:00 until 4:00, and the district expects to have more surplus computers at the end of the year.
