MURRAY, Utah (AP) -- An elderly man walked into his wife's room at Cottonwood Hospital Wednesday evening, shot her point blank and then turned the gun on himself, the hospital and Murray police said.
Hospital spokesman Jess Gomez said the shooting deaths happened about 6:15 p.m.
He said the woman was the only patient in the room, no one else was involved and the shots were not heard.
The bodies were discovered by an employee making a routine check on the patient, he said.
Police Detective Rob Hall said the weapon was a handgun, but declined to provide further information pending notification of kin.
The hospital does not check visitors with metal detectors and it would have been hard for anyone to have noticed that the man had a gun, Gomez said.
