(Spanish Fork-AP) -- A Utah company will erect two windmill towers to test wind velocity in Spanish Fork Canyon.
Heber City-based Wasatch Wind will determine if a wind farm at the mouth of the canyon can generate enough electricity to make it a practical source of low-cost electricity.
City officials agreed to provide a site and are drawing up a lease for the company.
If tests prove promising over six months starting next summer, Wasatch Wind will ask permission to build a wind farm at the mouth of the canyon.
Wasatch Wind is negotiating to sell the power to PacifiCorp, which does business in Utah as Utah Power.
Spanish Fork typically delivers a wind blast in late afternoon, which doesn't correspond with peak demand in Utah.
But the windmills could fill a need for off-peak energy production at a cost much less than coal- or natural gas-fire power plants.
