SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- With nearly two months yet to go, Utah already has equaled last year's homicide total.

A recent rash of deaths -- six in the last 17 days in Salt Lake County -- allowed this year's total to catch up.

But officials say the 46 deaths recorded last this and this is nothing compared to just a few years ago.

Bureau of Criminal Investigation records show it's still a far cry from the 67 slayings that occurred in 2001, and for the past decade, the average number of homicides has been 55.
