(KSL News) A man is dead after accidentally shooting himself in the leg this morning.

Police got a call around 5:30 am that a 20-year-old had been shot in a car at 7th North 815 West. By the time help arrived, police say he was dead.

Lt. Melody Gray/ Salt Lake City Police: "He had a gun in the car, and his friends said they heard a shot go off and he said, 'I shot myself.'"

The victim's name hasn't been released. His friends tell police he had been showing them the gun earlier in the day.

Police say he shot himself in the leg, hitting the femeral artery and bleeding out in a matter of minutes.
