(Salt Lake City-AP) -- The convict Salt Lake police discovered may be the Parkway Rapist will spend another 25 years in prison.
Rudy Michael Romero almost won parole for another crime last summer. But the Utah parole board ruled yesterday that the 40-year-old convict will stay locked up until he's 65.
That's based on new DNA evidence linking him to five of nine rapes in the early 1990s along the Jordan River.
Romero came within four months of being released last summer on parole. He has been in prison for a decade on an armed robbery conviction.
Asserting his Fifth Amendment rights, Romero declined to address the new allegations during several parole hearings. At the most recent hearing, last Friday, he demanded a lawyer.
The board declined to arrange representation for Romero, saying he wasn't entitled under the law.
