SYRACUSE -- A homecoming parade in Syracuse ended with a 17-year-old girl getting run over by a trailer Thursday night. The teen was flown to University Hospital with serious stomach injuries.
The parade was part of homecoming week at Syracuse High School.
According to police, the teen was watching the parade. When the parade reached the area of 2200 West and 700 South, the teen ran onto the tailgate of a Suburban pulling a trailer.
The girl then tried to jump off the tailgate, lost her footing and was run over by the trailer.
Police said the flatbed trailer was about 14 to 16 feet long and weighed about 1,500 pounds. Six to eight people were on the trailer at the time, adding to its weight.
"We recently had a 5-year-old boy killed by a trailer incident fairly similar to this, so everybody responded quite quickly hoping this wasn't the case," said Davis County sheriff's Sgt. Scott Harper.
There were officers on the scene immediately who were able to help the teen before the paramedics arrived.
According to Syracuse High School's website, the parade was scheduled to run from 6:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. It also said the parade would travel east on 700 from 3000 West to the school, which is located at 665 South and 2000 West.
Police said Syracuse High School had a training session for people on parade safety, but the teen was not part of that training.
