Kimberly Houk ReportingA man, police say is well known for drug dealing and selling firearms to some of Utah's most violent gangs, is no longer on the streets.

Last night at ten o'clock we reported that the streets in a Salt Lake neighborhood were closed off while police tried to negotiate with a man holed up inside a home. It took a SWAT team six hours to smoke the man out of this home. In the end, it was the tear gas that did it.

Dewayne Baird, SLC Police Dept.: "We deployed enough tear gas to make sure we filled the square footage of the house, to make it very uncomfortable for anyone who would be in there."

And out came 27-year old Terry James Scribner, a man police say is wanted for dealing large quantities of meth and marijuana. But what also scared police was Scribner's history of providing guns to some of Utah's most violent gangs.

Dewayne Baird: "We realized that he had access to weapons. He was familiar with the use of weapons, and we did not want to make this a more dangerous situation."

The situation could have turned violent after several officers approached Scribner's home to arrest him on a federal indictment. Police say Scribner immediately barricaded himself inside his home after spotting the officers.

Dewayne Baird: "Several attempts were made to make contact with Mr. Scribner without success. We then started to deploy."

The SWAT team was called in and police were tipped off by others who evacuated the home that Scribner had only slept one night out of the past nine, heavily strung out on Meth. Police were ready for his erratic behavior. They turned to their weapon of choice to bring Scribner to justice.

Dewayne Baird: "We deployed several rounds of tear gas in the house. And at that point Mr. Scribner decided to come out of the house. We took custody of him, and he is under arrest."

Scribner is in the Salt Lake County Jail tonight, where police say he is probably sleeping. Federal agents say he's looking at a minimum sentence of seven years for the charges he's facing.
