(KSL News) -- Becoming a new mom is a joyous occasion, even when it happens on the side of a highway.

That was the case this morning for Melissa Kerstetter. She says her water broke when she got out of bed. Her mother rushed her to the hospital, .but the baby had other ideas..

Melissa Kerstetter/New Mom: “We were on our way to Salt Lake on I-80 and got to about the airport and I realized I couldn't wait, she was coming."

They called 9-1-1 and arranged to meet paramedics on 600 South, 300 West. Kerstetter delivered baby Liberty in the front seat of her car.

Mom and baby were checked out at Salt Lake Regional Medical Center and both are doing fine.

Kerstetter's husband is in the Army Reserves, and heard the arrival over the phone.
