(KSL News) -- Everybody knows to call 9-1-1 in an emergency.

Not everyone knows the number to call when they need food, shelter, or medical care. That number is 2-1-1. The 2-1-1 info bank provides information about services in our community.

Director Josh Pedersen announced today, that on February eleventh, at precisely two eleven pm, the program is expanding.

Josh Pedersen, 2-1-1 Info Bank Director: " 2-1-1 in Utah is joining with a couple other states today on February 11th, to become the tenth state in the nation to offer 2-1-1 service statewide."

2-1-1 is also the number to call if you want to help people in distress.

Today, the Community Services Council honored some of our community's valiant volunteers, including Jill Johnson who was stabbed last month while helping at a food pantry.

Johnson says painful as the experience was, she won't let it damper her enthusiasm for volunteer work.

Jill Johnson, honored volunteer: "It was a remote, isolated Incident, and you can't let the bad guys win."

The 2-1-1 bank operates seven days a week, from 8:30 am to six pm.
