SALT LAKE CITY -- A man who crashed his car through a security gate at Hill Air Force Base on Aug. 20 appeared in Federal Court Friday. He faced a list of charges, including bank fraud, possessing stolen mail and possessing counterfeit identifications.
Teofilo Frankie Quintana, 40 of Ogden, pleaded not guilty, but said little else to the judge during his initial arraignment.
Prosecutors say investigators found numerous counterfeit checks and fake IDs in Quintana's crashed car. It hit a pop-up barrier deployed by a guard at Hill's South Gate after Quintana accelerated through the guard station.
Quintana fled on foot and was at large for about six hours.
Documents and other items found in his car led to a separate investigation that now involves the indictment of a second man, 31-year-old Stanley Ingram King of Salt Lake City, on similar charges.
"In this case there are plenty of leads to track down and evidence that suggested that they have been engaged in this kind of conduct and activity for quite some time," said U.S. Attorney for Utah Brett Tolman.
It still isn't clear why Quintana crashed the gate in the first place.
"We surmise it was an accident," Tolman said. "It may have been a wrong turn at a wrong time, and if that was the case he might have been uncomfortable being questioned by security there."
King is in state custody and is yet to be arraigned. A trial date for Quintana is set for mid-November.
