(KSL News) -- A Murray, Utah woman watching the tsunami devastation on TV decided to do something about it.
Joanna Nichols, a nurse, was turned down by the Red Cross when she offered to help. So, she went to Thailand on her own.
She ended up in the fishing villages on Phuket Island, working with a group of 80 volunteers. They provided medical care, and rebuilt homes and boats so the men could get back to work. An effort warmly received.
Joanna Nichols, Volunteer Nurse: "You don't look at our clothes, what we wear, because they're Muslim. You don't talk about religion you don't try to do anything you know negative to us..you just want to help...and I mean everyone was in tears because they were so grateful."
They even built a playground, for the children.
Joanna says she'd go back "in a heartbeat."
