ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) -- Washington County officials are waiting for more federal funds to pay for much-needed work due to January's floods.
Flood control work is needed along sections of the Virgin and Santa Clara rivers.
Washington County Commissioner Jim Earley said they're most concerned about the Virgin River. He said they keep getting more snow in the mountains.
Earley said a request by Senator Bob Bennett for an additional 66 (M)million-dollars to help stabilize riverbanks and protect watersheds will provide critical funds.
Eardley said he hopes the money will come soon, otherwise there will be vulnerability in several areas.
Bennett's spokeswoman said the senator expects the House to vote on the issue this week. She said the Senate will vote on the funding request next week, and then send it to President Bush for his signature.
January's floods caused more than 180 (M)million-dollars in damage.
