Tonya Papanikolas ReportingDuring a typical day a UPS worker generally makes more than 100 deliveries and pickups. One Utah worker has the "rhythm" down pat. Tonya Papanikolas spent the day with a man who must be rubbing off on his customers because they're "singing" his praises.
Don Bright is a UPS Service Provider delivering packages to downtown businesses.
Don Bright, UPS Service Provider: “Carrying on, carrying in, carrying up, picking up and setting down. That's what I do for a living."
But Don is unique in his "delivery."
Marcia Ruark, Don's UPS Customer: “So many people around here will come out and say, ‘Who’s that singing? His voice is beautiful!’ I say, ‘That’s Don, the UPS guy.’”
This "singing UPS guy" is met with candy treats at one office; other places he's greeted with smiles or applause.
The UPS worker has taken voice lessons for about 20 years. He's sung in choirs and musicals, and even took ballroom dance in college. But he says it's the little impromptu concerts along his routes that mean the most.
Don Bright: “Where there's just a few people around and they get all excited. It's kind of like it brightens the day of them as well as me."
Don's repertoire includes about 100 songs, he even has a new one taped to his truck's dashboard, plus he sings in several languages.
Deanette Widmer, Don's UPS Customer: “We think he’s great. I really think he needs to sing the National Anthem at NASCAR.”
Stephen Goodrich, UPS Spokesman: “Don is a real breath of fresh air in our operation.”
Marcia Ruark, UPS Customer: “He is so warm and fun, and he's a great guy. And we love it when he sings."
He doesn't plan to stop singing on the job until he retires this Fall. When Don retires he will have spent 30 years with UPS. He's been singing with the company for the last 15.
