SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Researchers at the Huntsman Cancer Institute may have found a way to stop many tumors.

The University of Utah scientists have found a way to inhibit a gene called Ras. Researcher Doctor Matthew K. Topham said defective Ras is believed to be responsible for at least 30-percent of human tumors.

Their findings may have treatment implications for cancers including pancreas, colon, lung and thyroid cancers, as well as leukemia.

Their research was reported this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Online Early Edition.
