PROVO, Utah (AP) -- Provo police say a 22-year-old Springville man was fatally wounded when he shot himself with a gun he thought was not loaded.

Brian Swinford was talking with a girl at Provo home when the incident happened Wednesday night.

Police Captain Rick Healey said Swinford pulled out the gun, pointed it at his stomach and pulled the trigger.

The girl's family called police and Swinford was taken to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, where he died during surgery.

Investigators said Swinford indicated at the scene of the shooting that he did not realize the gun was loaded.
