SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A construction worker accused of beating a man to death last year has been found guilty of first-degree murder.
After deliberating less than three hours, the jury convicted 39-year-old Robin Lance Kaaloa of killing 25-year-old Jerry Coates with a baseball bat last July.
The jury also convicted Kaaloa of second-degree obstruction of justice.
Kaaloa admitted he destroyed evidence after the killing by cleaning up his apartment and dumping Coates' body in Wasatch County. However, he claims the killing was in self-defense.
Kaaloa testified he beat Coates with the bat because Coates attacked him with a machete. However, prosecutors claim the physical evidence did NOT support Kaaloa's story.
A sentencing hearing has been set for August 12th. Kaaloa faces up to life in prison.
