ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) -- Dixie State College officially has a new mascot, six years after dumping their old one.

Yesterday, the school's Board of Trustees approved a red hawk to replace Rodney Rebel. Although the school has a new mascot, teams will still be the Rebels.

The red hawk mascot was nearly a year-long process in which students, faculty, alumni and members of the community had a chance to vote for their favorite mascot.

Rodney Rebel's long-time stint as the college mascot ended in 1999 after controversy over the negative aspects of using the image of a Confederate soldier.

The college hopes to have the new red hawk mascot ready this fall.
