Richard Piatt ReportingMonsoon style rain pounded northern Utah tonight. It was coming down about as hard as it ever does around here. It was even worse, in southern Utah, where the rain came down so hard homes were flooded in Ivins and Winchester Hills.

In Davis County the weather service issued a tornado warning, which was called off just after 9:00, at which point things in Layton calmed down.
This monsoon thunderstorm came up suddenly in northern Utah, and the surprise was its widespread impact. A lot of people got soaked along the way.
It all started as a line of lightning strikes on its leading edge. But by 7:30 it was pouring in Salt Lake, Toole, Summit, and Utah Counties. In some streets there was minor flooding, and the tornado warning in Davis County.
There was severe wind damage in the West Point area and minor flooding in other areas. There was nothing life-threatening.

Rains drenched southern Utah too with cloud bursts. In New Harmony they received almost two inches of rain in about 45 minutes. The burn area of St. George reported over two inches.
Flooding occurred from Diamond Valley to Winchester Hills. One resident reported 3.86 inches at his house.
A number of homes were damaged, with water in basements. It’s in the same area of the state that has seen a number of recent fires, making it more difficult for the soil to handle such a large amount of water so quickly.
