KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- A federal appeals court upholds a seven-figure verdict against the Mormon church for a 1985 lawn-mowing accident in Kansas City that cut off most of a child's foot.
In a lawsuit filed three years ago, Lamoni Riordan (REER'-duhn) blamed the church for the negligence of mower operator Ken Riordan, who is also Lamoni's father.
Riordan was five years old when the riding mower his father was operating outside the church ran over and amputated most of his right foot.
The lawsuit said the church failed to train and supervise his father and allowed him to use a poorly maintained mower. The church argued it was a case of parental negligence.
Last year, a jury awarded one-point-18 (M)million dollars to Riordan. He had waited to sue because the church had agreed to pay his medical expenses for at least 15 years after the accident.
