SALT LAKE CITY -- A preliminary hearing for a man accused of strangling his friend to death at a birthday party starts Monday.

Paul Willson was arrested several weekends ago in the death of Jonathan Tobey. Sheriff's officials say the pair was celebrating with friends in Price Canyon and at some point Tobey became belligerent.

Willson claims he tried to calm Tobey down by sitting on him and putting him in a choke hold. Tobey, though, passed out and died.
