(KSL News) Starting in January, smoking will be banned at Utah's Hogle Zoo.

The Deseret Morning News reports the zoo's board of directors voted unanimously to adopt a non-smoking policy due to health concerns.

A recent smoking ban in Salt Lake City's public parks helped push the zoo's proposal along.

Zookeepers are excited about the new change, saying cigarette butts can be a risk to the animals.

The National Zoo in Washington DC banned smoking last month, and about a third of the zoos nationwide are smoke-free.
