MOSCOW, Dec 1, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- The publisher of Russia's version of Forbes magazine has withdrawn the December issue under pressure, a report says.
The pressure allegedly came from a company that incudes the mayor of Moscow's wife as an executive.
The magazine was supposed to have carried a seven-page article about the mayor's wife, Yelena Baturina, who heads the investment and construction firm Inteko, Novosti reported Friday.
Baturina's picture was supposed to on the cover with the quote, "I have guaranteed protection."
But prior to publication, Ineko officials visited the publisher, Germany's Axel Springer, and threatened a lawsuit, saying the quote on the cover was a distortion of what Baturina said, Novosti reported. The officials argued that Baturina had in reality said, "I have guaranteed protection as an investor."
The editor-in-chief of the magazine resigned over the controversy.
"It was more important for me to publish the article itself rather than the quote," Maksim Kashulinsky told Novosti. "It is very sad that a Western publication treats its business in Russia like this."
