A lot of folks were talking, complaining about the drive to work this morning. It was an especially busy day for crews clearing the roads and the shelters serving record numbers of people looking to come in from the cold. Tonight it's gonna be chilly again.
Spence Smith: "In the teens, below ten maybe. Too cold to be standing here!"
Wendee Lawson: "It's cold. It's really cold out here."
These folks were on their way to the Jazz game, probably the only good reason to be walking outside tonight. This morning snow plows struggled to keep up and dozens of drivers crashed on their way to work.
Lynn Bernhard P.E., Methods Engineer, Utah Dept of Transportation: "One of the problems we have clearing the roads in urban areas is that people are out driving on them."
Jake Brown, Utah Department of Transportation: "I've had cars several times pass me on the shoulder on the left hand side with just barely enough room to squeak by. I've had to move for them."
Getting people off the streets is the goal tonight for homeless shelters and outreach services. The Road Home is feeding and housing about 800 a night.
Michelle Flynn, Road Home: "We always need help, particularly with blankets, cold weather items like socks, gloves, hats, scarves. Those types of things are our top needs."
The problem with the salt solutions for the road is many are only effective down to 5 degrees. It got down to four last night.
